Steve Round is in advanced talks to become Aston Villa's technical director, according to Sky sources.
Round, 45, was assistant manager to David Moyes at Everton and Manchester United.
We understand a deal has yet to be signed.
Round nearly joined Villa last year and met manager - at the time - Remi Garde to discuss becoming part of his coaching staff.
He turned the offer down however, saying the role offered was too junior.
Round's playing career was ended by injury after just nine games for Derby County. He joined the Rams' coaching staff, working under Steve McClaren.
He followed McClaren to Middlesbrough before working under Sam Allardyce at Newcastle. Everton, and his partnership with Moyes, followed, taking him to Goodison Park and then Old Trafford.
