Aston Villa are close to agreeing a deal to re-sign goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on loan from Manchester United, according to Sky sources.

Johnstone spent the second half of last season on loan at Villa, having joined in January, and kept eight clean sheets in 22 appearances for the Sky Bet Championship club.

Sky Sports News HQ understands Villa boss Steve Bruce is keen to tie up a deal ahead of the new season and that Johnstone is enthusiastic about the prospect of returning to the club.

Football fans will get two dedicated new channels this summer as part of the biggest ever change to Sky Sports.

The 24-year-old was not included in Man United's squad for the pre-season tour of the USA with David de Gea, Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira ahead of him in the pecking order.

Johnstone, a product of the Man United academy, is yet to make a first-team appearance for the Red Devils and has previously spent time on loan at Scunthorpe, Walsall, Yeovil, Doncaster and Preston.
