Steve McClaren has called on Newcastle fans to keep faith with him as manager despite the club's poor start to the season.

The Magpies are currently second from bottom of the Premier League standings, with no wins and two draws from McClaren's first six league games in charge.

And this follows a terrible second half to the previous campaign, which saw Newcastle plummet down the table before securing Premier League survival on the final day.

McClaren says he understands why fans may be getting anxious but, having only taken charge in the summer, he has asked for patience and has vowed that he will succeed at St James' Park in the end.

"As a supporter, with what happened last season, and then the expectation of this, it is a little bit of blind faith that is needed, that is required," said McClaren.

"A bit of blind faith and belief that eventually we will get it right, turn it around, and start performing and winning games. Yes, we will eventually do that.

"We don't need to be told, we know what is going on. We know what we have to do, we know the solutions, we just have to go out there and do it."

Newcastle suffered a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Watford on Saturday but McClaren says he has received the reaction he wanted from his players, who are queuing up to be in the side for the Capital One Cup tie at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Newcastle boss Steve McClaren said his players must keep calm and dust themselves down following their 2-1 loss at home to Watford.

"Tomorrow [Wednesday] is a big game for us," said McClaren. "It is a massive game for us, no two ways about it.

"The reaction from the players - and you need to see this, and it needs to be demonstrated on the field - but three, four, five of them already have come and said, 'I don't want to rest, I want to play', and that is what we need.

"That is the kind of characters that will get us performing and winning games."
