Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren insists his side are the underdogs for Sunday's derby showdown with Sunderland despite their 6-2 thrashing of Norwich City last weekend.

The Black Cats have yet to win in the Premier League this season and sit bottom of the table, but McClaren says they should still be regarded as favourites as new manager Sam Allardyce prepares for his first home game in charge.

The Magpies will also be bidding to end a dismal run of five straight defeats to their North-East rivals when they head to the Stadium of Light.

Their last derby win came on Wearside back in August 2011 when they triumphed 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ryan Taylor.

"Sunderland have won the last five derbies, they are the favourites, and they are at home. It's a tough one for us," said McClaren.
