Newcastle United fans asked to sing up for Pavel Srnicek

Pavel Srnricek's family have asked for fans at Newcastle's Boxing Day game with Everton to sing a half-time chant in his honour to be recorded and played at his bedside.

The former Newcastle goalkeeper is in an induced coma after suffering a cardiac arrest on December 20 and Newcastle legends have tweeted their support of the request to get the fans singing at St James' Park.

"Let's get 52,000 Geordies roaring this....keep fighting Pav!!," former United player and assistant manager Terry McDermott said on Twitter. "Keep fighting Pav, we are all praying for you mate."

Alan Shearer also got behind the campaign, tweeting: "Sing it for Pav!"

Don Hutchison also urged fellow Newcastle fans to become involved, commenting: "Geordies pls sing as LOUD as u can!!!!!!"

Former Czech Republic international Srnicek played 189 times for Newcastle between 1991 and 1998 before returning to the club for a brief spell in the 2006/07 season prior to his retirement.

The 47-year-old, who also played for Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth and West Ham during his career, collapsed while out running near his home in Ostrava.

Just days earlier, Srnicek had been in the north-east of England promoting his forthcoming autobiography Pavel is a Geordie.
