Preston forward Paul Gallagher was given a straight red card for this handball

Preston forward Paul Gallagher was given a straight red card at St James' Park after his remarkable "save" against Newcastle on Monday.

The Lilywhites' captain was correctly dismissed after a handball on the line stopped Isaac Hayden's goal-bound effort.

Matt Ritchie dispatched the resulting penalty and Newcastle ultimately ran out 4-1 winners, sealing their return to the Premier League.

Ayoze Perez put the hosts ahead before Jordan Hugill levelled for Preston, but Newcastle were not going to be denied having slipped up against Ipswich last Monday.

Christian Atsu restored their advantage on the stroke of half-time, Ritchie added their third from the spot and Perez grabbed his second of the night.

Rafael Benitez's side are next in action at Cardiff City on Friday, a game shown live on Sky Sports, and could still catch league leaders Brighton if Chris Hughton's side falter.
