Newcastle midfielder Mikel Merino has signed a five-year contract after joining from Borussia Dortmund on a permanent basis.

The Spaniard originally joined on loan from Dortmund in July but the Magpies have now exercised an option to turn the move into a permanent transfer with immediate effect.

The 21-year-old is looking forward to continuing his development at St. James' Park after committing himself to Newcastle until 2022.

"I'm really happy to be here, and for this part of the contract to finally be official," he told NUFC TV.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez says there was no risk in taking up the option to sign Mikel Merino on a permanent deal.

"I'm focused on my displays and improving myself, and I'm really happy to have signed this contract."
