Newcastle manager Steve McClaren insists that his side are taking the Capital One Cup very seriously and will play a full strength team against Northampton

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren says he will not field a weakened team against Northampton in Tuesday night's Capital One Cup fixture.

The Magpies have traditionally used the League Cup as an opportunity to field fringe players, although that policy now looks set to change as McClaren attempts to end a 60-year wait for domestic cup success on Tyneside.

The Cobblers have lost their last two games and currently sit in 10th position in Sky Bet League Two, but McClaren says he will be taking nothing for granted against Chris Wilder's side in the second-round tie.

"Nobody in football wants to lose a football match and they put a team out that can win that game, and that's what we will be doing on Tuesday," said McClaren, whose side drew 0-0 with Manchester United at Old Trafford at the weekend.

"We'll be putting our strongest team possible out, taking into account what happened on Saturday, taking into account there's a game next Saturday, taking into account that we have got a very good squad.

"But Tuesday night's team is strong enough and good enough to win the game. The attitude has to be right, though."

McClaren has enjoyed previous success in the League Cup, guiding Middlesbrough to a 2-1 victory over Bolton in the 2003/04 final - the club's only major trophy to date.

The former England manager revealed that the competition's first round was as difficult to navigate as any other that year.

"I remember when we did win it, we played Brighton and they were, I think, in the Third Division at the time," said McClaren.

"It went to extra-time and I think we won 1-0 with a flukey goal, and it was the best win of the run, it really was because the first one is the hardest."
