Sergio Aguero is the second fastest man to 100 Premier League goals

Aguero

Sergio Aguero continued his impressive form in front of goal as he scored the opener against Newcastle in Manchester City's 1-1 draw at St James' Park.

In doing so, the Argentine forward became the 25th player in Premier League history to score 100 goals in the competition.

However, not many of those can claim to have done so as swiftly as Aguero. Here's where he ranks among the Premier League's best…

Matches taken to reach 100

Only Alan Shearer racked up 100 Premier League goals in fewer appearances than Aguero. The England striker required only 124 matches to bring up his ton.

How has he scored them?

Sergio Aguero has scored 74 of his 100 goals with his right foot, 19 with his left and seven with his head.

Aguero required 147 games to reach the same mark. That achievement pushes Arsenal's iconic forward Thierry Henry into third spot with the Frenchman having taken 160 games.

The next three men on the list all accomplished the feat in the 1990s with England forwards Ian Wright, Robbie Fowler and Les Ferdinand getting there in short time too.

Minutes per goal in 100 club

With the likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes among the 25 players to score 100 Premier League goals, it's a measure of longevity as much as goalscoring prowess.

Who has set them up?

  • 12 - David Silva
  • 10 - Yaya Toure
  • 9 - Samir Nasri
  • 5 - Aleksandar Kolarov
  • 5 - Jesus Navas
  • 4 - James Milner

But when it comes to goalscoring frequency, Aguero is on course to become the Premier League's all-time most ruthless finisher.

Fewest minutes per Premier League goal

Player Minutes per goal
Sergio Aguero 108.4
Thierry Henry 121.8
Ruud van Nistelrooy 128.2

The Manchester City man has scored his 100 goals at a rate of one every 108 minutes. That eclipses every other player, including Alan Shearer.

Some way to go to top the list

Shearer's strike rate is somewhat affected by the fact that the ex-Newcastle striker continued to play in the Premier League until past his 35th birthday.

But in his time at Blackburn and Newcastle, Shearer scored 260 Premier League goals - meaning that Aguero is only 38 per cent of the way to reaching the record total.

Even so, with Aguero just 27, City supporters will be hoping that the club's No 10 can make some inroads into that record in the years to come.
