Phil Neville says Manchester City’s squad needs strengthening more than any of their top-six rivals in the Premier League.

Phil Neville says Manchester City's squad needs the most strengthening of those teams that finished in the top six last season.

Pep Guardiola steered his side to third in his first campaign in charge and has released a number of players this summer including Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy, Jesus Navas, Bacary Sagna and Willy Caballero.

Former Manchester United defender Neville feels Guardiola has a greater need for quality signings compared to City's main competitors, but insists they are still capable of winning the title this year.

Speaking at last week's launch of Sky Bet Super 6's sponsorship of Salford City FC, he said: "If you look at the last two winners of the Premier League, they've come from Leicester, who finished in 16th the season before they went on to win the Premier League, and Chelsea finished mid-table the previous year [before winning].

"Whatever happened last year doesn't really matter going into this season because we've seen in the last two seasons you can win the league from nowhere.

"Every team in the top six will strengthen. Every team needs better players and a better quality of squad - and City more than probably any of them."

Guardiola has already brought in goalkeeper Ederson from Benfica and attacker Bernardo Silva from Monaco this summer and is now closing in on Tottenham's Kyle Walker, according to Sky sources.

But Neville, speaking before the Walker deal edged closer, said he expected further additions and highlighted the full-back position as an area to address.

"I think he probably realised at the end of the season he was a long way from winning a Premier League," Neville added. "He has probably learned a lot about what is needed.

"It looks like he is going to strengthen in the full-back areas. Bernardo Silva has come in and he is a fantastic player, who I've watched a lot over the last couple of seasons.

"I'm sure they will bring in three or four more because it's a squad that needs it. They've got rid of a lot of players, so they are going to have to replace them with added quality."
