Vincent Kompany believes that Manchester City's increased competition for places is the reason behind the club's impressive start to the season.

City are the only team to have won their opening three Barclays Premier League games and are yet to concede a goal since the start of the campaign.

Manuel Pellegrini has continued to strengthen his squad in the meantime with Nicolas Otamendi being the latest big money arrival at the Etihad.

Wolfsburg playmaker Kevin de Bruyne looks set to join the Argentinian in Manchester, with a record £58m deal rumoured to be close to completion.

City's captain Kompany thinks the club's strength in depth will prove crucial this season.

"That is one of the reasons we have started so strong," said the 29 year-old.

"You can't really afford to do anything wrong during the week leading up to the game. Then, during the game, you can't do anything wrong either as there is always someone looking over your shoulder, waiting, who is just as good as you.

"You have got to be at the top of your game. This is what you are seeing, a group of guys who know that they need to perform. If they don't, someone else will do it."

Kompany, who has scored twice already this season, says he's pleased with his own form, especially when compared to last season's disappointing performances.

"It shows on the pitch that I feel good and I feel happy with myself," he said.

"I just don't want to miss any opportunities to have a good game or have a good season. Every game counts for me. That's when I need to perform.

"The extra competition is good, really good. You don't play for a top team unless you have that."
