Stewart Downing has been told he can leave Middlesbrough on loan this month, according to Sky sources.

The former England winger has started just one game in two months after beginning the season as a regular in Aitor Karanka's side.

And Boro are prepared to sanction Downing's departure until the summer as part of a January clearout which could also see two strikers go.

Karanka has admitted the recent purchase of Rudy Gestede could hasten Jordan Rhodes' exit, while Derby are closing on a £2m deal for David Nugent.
