Middlesbrough midfielder Marten De Roon has rejoined Atalanta.

The 26-year-old joined Middlesbrough for £12m from the Italian side last summer but has returned to Italy after playing just one game in the Championship this season, with the fee believed to be £13m, according to Sky sources.

De Roon made 33 appearances last season in the Premier League, scoring four goals as Boro were relegated.

The midfielder made his senior debut for the Netherlands last year and has also played for Sparta Rotterdam.

Middlesbrough have spent heavily during the summer transfer window with £15m striker Britt Assombalonga heading a big list of new players.
