Boro and Rivaldo rumours grow
North East sources have claimed that members of Boro's hierarchy were plotting a bid to bring Rivaldo to Teesside and team him up with World Cup winning team-mate Juninho.
Champions League finalists Milan are believed to be ready to allow Rivaldo to leave Giuseppe Meazza for nothing, although the player's huge wages are likely to be a major problem for any club.
However, Spanish newspaper AS have now quoted McClaren as saying that he wants Rivaldo.
"Next season we have to create a strong team," McClaren is reported to have said.
"I was not satisfied with how things went, but the chairman is aiming in a good direction to reinforce the side.
"Rivaldo? If he remains free than there is a good possibility."
It remains to be seen whether Boro's interest in Rivaldo is concrete, but the club have refused to comment on the stories about the Brazilian.
A statement from the club said: "It's our policy to not comment on press speculation.
"There's sure to be many names linked with the club over the summer and we don't intend to confirm or deny our interest player by player.
"Steve McClaren has gone on record to say he wants to further strengthen the squad.
"As soon as we have something definite to tell supporters about any incoming players we will do so immediately."
