Wigan boss Gary Caldwell said: "It's tragic news. I played alongside Steve as a team-mate for Wigan and it's terrible when such a young life ends, whatever the reasons, which are still unclear I believe.

"I heard our fans singing his name during the match then got the news after the game. All we can do as a club is send our thoughts to his family and those affected. Very sad."

Wigan posted on their Twitter account: "We are saddened to hear reports of our former defender Steve Gohouri passing away. Our thoughts are with his family."

The former Ivory Coast international previously played for Young Boys, Borussia Moenchengladbach and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
