Gary Caldwell sacked by Wigan after slow start to Championship season

Wigan season preview

Championship strugglers Wigan have announced the sacking of manager Gary Caldwell with immediate effect.

Caldwell led the Latics to promotion last season but they have made a slow start to this campaign and currently lie 23rd, with just two wins from their first 14 games.

Chairman David Sharpe said: "It's undoubtedly the toughest decision I've had to make since becoming Chairman."

Caldwell initially joined Wigan as a player in January 2010 and will go down in club history, having captained the club to a memorable FA Cup success in 2013 - although he was an unused substitute for the final.

Wigan were also relegated from the Premier League that season, after an eight-year stint in the top flight, and Caldwell was named manager just under two years later, with the club facing imminent relegation to League One.

Caldwell proved unable to keep them up but successfully masterminded a very successful 2015/16 campaign which ended with the Latics lifting the League One trophy.

However, following Saturday's 1-0 loss at home to Brighton, Wigan find themselves three points adrift of safety, without a win since September 27, and having scored just once in their last four, albeit still managing to draw three of those fixtures.

Sharpe added: "We deservedly won the League One title last season.

"However, we have not managed to carry on that momentum into this season and, after careful consideration over a period of time, I feel that we need to act now in the best long term interests of the club.

"We thank Gary for all the hard work he has put in and wish him all the best for the future.

"We need to identify a new manager who can have an immediate impact and deliver success in the long term."
