Charlton's interim manager Karel Fraeye was thrilled with his players for proving the doubters wrong after their 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday.
The Addicks stunned in-form Wednesday with goals from skipper Johnnie Jackson, striker Simon Makienok and Reza Ghoochannejhad.
Fernando Forestieri pulled one back but it merely proved a consolation as struggling Charlton held on.
"It was a game on paper that everyone said we had no chance," said Fraeye, who is enjoying a second stint at the Valley.
"Wednesday were unbeaten in 11 games and we were on poor run and had not scored, so from the outside the perception for our team was very negative.
"But inside we believed we had the qualities and I put into the head of the players how hard work pays off."
Fraeye, who has brought in former Charlton striker Jason Euell as a coach, insisted desire was the watchword for success.
"Desire was the code word of the day," he added. "The desire was big and if you have a massive desire you can have a big win."
Charlton showed their desire from the off, with Makienok going close in the opening minute and the home side thoroughly deserved their opener from Jackson.
"We knew first goal was important - it can inspire us or kill us," Fraeye said. "We knew we could hurt them with our set plays and so it proved.
"I was pleased for the skipper. He deserved that goal for everything he has done. The fans played their part too and pushed the players forward.
"The second goal came at a great time, right on half-time, and then we scored an excellent third goal.
"Even though Sheffield Wednesday got a goal back, I knew it was going to be our day and we were not going to lose."
Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal gave Charlton full credit for their victory and felt it was a game too far for his side.
"Congratulation to Charlton, they deserved to win," the Portuguese said.
"We have played a lot of games with high intensity, for example against Arsenal, and we have kept four clean sheets but we did not have the energy.
"Charlton played with high intensity and we could not match their style. We lost players with injury through the game because their bodies could no longer take it and it meant it was not our day.
"It was not about complacency, it was about the lack of energy. Players could not deal with it. It can happen. No one can control this kind of thing. It was a bad day for us but congratulations to Charlton.
"We need the international break and we need to find out how (Glenn) Loovens, Jack Hunt, and Barry Bannan are. We expect to be back at full strength by next week."
