GERS` KANOUTE BID REVEALED

HARRY REDKNAPP has revealed Rangers` search for a striker ahead of the Champions League also focused on West Ham striker Frederic Kanoute, adding that he rejected an £11 million bid.

The Gers were desperate to sign a striker before Thursday`s deadline and pulled out of a £6 million swoop for John Hartson on Friday after failing in a bid to sign Espanyol striker Raul Tamudo.

Redknapp previously revealed that Kanoute had been the subject of a huge bid but until now the source of the offer was a mystery.

"They [Rangers] made an £11 million bid, but Freddie is now in the Rio Ferdinand bracket - not for sale at any price," Redknapp said.

Rangers` rivals Celtic had a £7.5 million bid for the 22-year-old French striker turned down last season when he was still at Lyon.

Meanwhile, Ibrox chairman David Murray has explained the reasons why the club abandoned the planned acquisition of Hartson and spoke of his sympathy for the Welsh international striker.

"The Hartson deal was called off not due to the knee problems which scuppered his move to Spurs but for the simple reason he was not up to the fitness level we required," Murray said.

"I said right at the start that Hartson would have an intense medical examination as we had had problems in the past by rushing things through.

"Maybe we were a bit unrealistic in the first instance to ask the player to improve things at Rangers immediately as he has only played a couple of times in the last six months.

"The player was devestated and I have every sympathy for him as he so badly wanted to play for Rangers. That was shown by the fact that it took only 10 minutes to agree personal terms."
