Sky Sports Fantasy Football: We look at 14/15's highest scoring XI
Friday 17 July 2015 17:10, UK
We look back at the 2014/15 Fantasy Football campaign and highlight the players who racked up the highest points totals.
Sky Sports Fantasy Football is back for the new campaign with a £20,000 jackpot plus a whole host of other prizes up for grabs.
You can also take on the likes of Jamie Redknapp and Paul Merson by entering the various Sky Sports leagues.
Goalkeeper
Lukasz Fabianski - 125 points
Arsenal’s goalkeepers have come in for some flak in recent years but Lukasz Fabianski, who made just 33 outings across eight seasons as a bit-part player for the Gunners, relished the opportunity to be No 1 between the sticks for Swansea last term and rewarded Fantasy Football managers handsomely. The 30-year-old Poland ‘keeper made an impressive 140 saves and kept 13 clean sheets in 37 starts for the Swans, one more than Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois, who admittedly made five fewer appearances.
Defenders
Branislav Ivanovic - 165 points
Ask any Fantasy Football veteran who the most potent defender available in the top flight is and the vast majority will come up with Ivanovic. An absolute linchpin for Jose Mourinho’s Blues over the years, he topped the defending charts last term largely due to his attacking threat. The versatile defender took his Premier League career goals tally to 20 with four more during the 2014/15 campaign, while he also clocked up a valuable five assists during the year. His discipline is often a point of frustration and he was shown a yellow card 11 times last term, but that’s an occupational hazard to some extent and the 17 clean sheets certainly made up for it.
John Terry - 163 points
John Terry remarkably played every single game for champions Chelsea last season and some have argued it was his finest hour as Blues captain. The five goals he scored was a fantastic return from the 34-year-old, a tally he only managed to better when netting six in the 2011/12 campaign. A total of 30 blocks and 216 clearances, backed up by 17 clean sheets, saw him finish second only to team-mate Ivanovic in the defender standings last season and he only picked up two cards. Terry is Fantasy Football royalty and will be high on every shortlist going into the new season, but will the advancing years finally start catching up with him?
Jose Fonte - 141 points
Many pundits wrongly presumed losing Dejan Lovren to Liverpool was going to throw Southampton’s defence into a state of disarray, but Jose Fonte stepped up to the plate with a tremendous season at the heart of the Saints’ back line. His smart organisational skills helped Ronald Koeman’s men record 15 clean sheets and that tally saw Fonte to an impressive 141 points, despite failing to score and contributing just the solitary assist. He stayed injury-free last term and started 37 of his side’s 38 top-flight games, meaning he’ll be in high demand going into this season.
Cesar Azpilicueta - 139 points
Completing the back-four is yet another Chelsea man and it's Cesar Azpilicueta weighing in with 139 points. His industrious style of play means the full-back is often seen in the attacking third of the pitch for the Blues and he picked up a respectable three assists after making a total of 38 crosses in the last campaign. A swathe of clean sheets is almost guaranteed when Fantasy managers opt to pick one of Jose Mourinho’s defenders and Azpilicueta kept 14, including 10 blocks and 88 clearances.
Midfielders
Eden Hazard - 249 points
Eden Hazard was the man you simply could not afford to be without during 2014/15 and the Chelsea winger was the highest scoring player across all positions. He was unplayable at times and also turned up with his best form in some of the toughest games, scoring against Arsenal, Tottenham (twice), Liverpool and Manchester United along the way. Remarkably for the player who attracted more fouls than anyone else, Hazard avoided injury and played every match for Chelsea, while he has never been sent off in the Premier League and has only picked up two bookings in each of the past three seasons. His tally of 14 goals, including three from the penalty spot, matched that of the previous campaign but his number of assists increased from seven to nine.
Santi Cazorla - 186 points
Alexis Sanchez was the name on everyone’s lips at the end of last season but the Chilean was swift to point to the creative brilliance of Santi Cazorla in plenty of interviews and a glance at the Spain playmaker’s 2014/15 points haul tells us why. Despite all the competition for places in Arsenal’s midfield Cazorla made 37 appearances (including four from the bench) and rewarded Arsene Wenger and Fantasy Football managers alike with seven goals and 11 assists. His role as Gunners penalty taker is a huge asset, especially considering how often his side like to get numbers inside the opposition area, and Cazorla looks like he’ll keep producing the good for as long as he remains in the Premier League.
David Silva - 213 points
Manchester City’s David Silva has been a slightly frustrating midfielder in previous Fantasy Football campaigns, so often playing the pass before the assist, or having a fantastic game without getting among the major points. But last year was his time to shine and the Spain midfielder wasn’t too far behind team-mate Sergio Aguero in the overall points standings at the end of May. A total of 12 goals represented his best ever return in a City shirt and although seven assists was a decrease on his three previous seasons, the consistency of his scoring meant his Fantasy Football popularity never really waned.
Strikers
Sergio Aguero - 250 points
Sergio Aguero’s injury problems have been well documented but such is his Fantasy Football scoring prowess that managers have little option but to pick him and act accordingly if and when he is ruled out. Last season the diminutive Argentine scored a brace in four matches, bagged a hat-trick against QPR and also claimed all four goals in Man City’s 4-1 victory over Tottenham. Those massive weekly hauls are unmissable if you’re looking to make an impact in private leagues, while his overall tallies of 26 goals and eight assists were phenomenal.
Harry Kane - 217 points
Occasionally a player comes along who is considered no more than a useful budget option for Fantasy Football managers before exploding into something everyone wants a piece of, and last year it was Tottenham’s Harry Kane. He was belying his lowly price-tag by performing like a £9m man for the most part of the season and ended with 21 league goals. He also weighed in with four assists in a remarkable campaign that some believe may be difficult to emulate. Whether he is still playing for Spurs on August 8 is another factor in selecting Kane, with a switch to a top-four club potentially going to have an impact on his game-time.
Alexis Sanchez - 200 points
A lot was expected of Arsenal’s big summer signing and although his form understandably took a bit of a dip early in 2015 (scored just once in seven Premier League outings between January 18 and March 21), his overall contribution to Fantasy Football managers was a whopping 200 points. With a year in the division under his belt, there’s every reason to believe Sanchez can improve on his 16 goals and eight assists this time, and scoring the winning penalty for Chile in the Copa America final will not have done his confidence any harm.
