New Rotherham manager Neil Redfearn is confident the players can turn it around and move up the table

New Rotherham United manager Neil Redfearn believes he has joined a club with real Premier League potential.

Redfearn last week signed a two-and-a-half-year deal to replace Steve Evans, the manager who led Rotherham out of League One in 2014 and kept them in the Championship last season.

And the 50-year-old, who left Leeds in the summer, told Sky Sports News HQ his remit is to build on Evans' good work and take the club to the next level.

Asked whether he could see Rotherham in the top division he said: "Definitely so. As recently as last season Bournemouth got themselves up there.

"I played for Barnsley, who were unfashionable at this level at the time and got into the Premier League.

"This is a club that's capable of going on to the next level - that's what excites me, and it's a real challenge. We've got some talented boys, we want to open their minds, try and develop them and make them stronger.

"It's a tough division to get out of, and I think sometimes it takes a different approach. The club's had lots of recent success - Steve Evans has been a big part of it and has to take a lot of credit. I'm here to pick up the baton."

Redfearn was one of three men to manage Leeds in last season's Championship and was replaced by Uwe Rosler in May.

He initially stayed on at Elland Road having been offered his old role as academy boss but left in July after claiming his position had become "untenable".

"It was a great learning curve," he said. "It's probably one of the biggest clubs in the country, Leeds, and we managed to turn it round and introduce a lot of talented young players."
