Lee Carsley's last match as Brentford interim head coach ended in a draw against Bolton at the Macron Stadium

Lee Carsley said he 'didn't feel ready' to take on the Brentford head coach job full time after the game at Bolton in the Sky Bet Championship on Monday evening.

The interim boss took charge of his last game at the Macron Stadium as his Bees side picked up a point during a 1-1 draw.

The club had announced earlier in the day that Dean Smith was to take up the role as manager, with the former Walsall boss in the stands to watch his new side.

"I just didn't think I was ready for it," Carsley told Sky Sports when asked why he did not take the job himself after an impressive stint at the helm.

"I see myself in the development side. I like working with the younger players, from the under-21's and down and I feel like that's a real strength. If anything, it's shown me that I can do it when I'm ready and maybe in four or five years, I will give it a go.

"Dean should be pleased with what he's seen tonight. I think there were a lot of good performances and a lot of players who are playing well and with a lot of confidence. I said it last week, it will be a much smoother club to come into now and I'm sure he'll be looking forward to starting work."

Highlights of the Sky Bet Championship match between Bolton and Brentford

Brentford took the lead at the Macron Stadium after a lovely goal from Chelsea loanee John Swift before Neil Danns levelled it up in the second half.

"I enjoyed it and I thought we played really well at times. We controlled the game, created enough chances and we probably had enough to win a couple of games there so in that respect, it was a good point away from home but gutted that we couldn't get all three.

"Even after they equalised, I felt they were only going to score with a set-piece. They were really strong with their free kicks and their corners tonight and caused us a lot of problems but overall I'm pleased with the lads."
