Paul Clement rued a "lack of creativity" from Derby in their goalless draw with Sheffield Wednesday.
The Rams missed the chance to potentially go second in the Championship in a game of few clear opportunities at Hillsborough.
Bradley Johnson went closest to a winner when he smashed his free-kick the bar in the second half, but the Rams mustered only two shots on target throughout the match.
"My initial assessment is that we didn't play very well," Rams boss Clement told Sky Sports. "We didn't create many clear-cut opportunities…we lacked creativity, but defensively we were ok and we defended our box well.
"They worked very hard defensively and we just didn't shift the ball on quick enough. As a result we found it difficult to break them down, but we have to do better with the ball."
The draw keeps Derby third in the table but they have the chance to make up ground on the top two next weekend when they host leaders Brighton.
"This is a difficult place to come," added Clement. "They have a good home record and I hope it will be a valuable point come the end of the season."
Sheffield Wednesday have only lost once at home in the Championship this season and head coach Carlos Carvalhal is pleased with their progress.
"After five months of work the way we are playing is fantastic," he said. "We played very well, especially in the first half, when we deserved to be ahead.
"The second half was a little more balanced but I think the way we are playing is fantastic.
"I think we are at a good level but in the process we can improve the team. I am happy with what we are doing."
