Charlton Athletic have failed in their bid to lure Chris Wilder from Northampton Town.

The Addicks, relegated from the Championship this season, had hoped to make Wilder their new boss in place of Jose Riga, who stepped down after their season-ending 3-0 defeat to Burnley.

Wilder guided Northampton to the League Two title and the Cobblers will meet the Addicks in League One next season.

Northampton agreed to let Wilder talk to Charlton after the Londoners made an approach last week.

But talks between Wilder - and his assistant Alan Knill - have not ended in an agreement.

An Athletic statement read: "Charlton Athletic can confirm that following discussions with Northampton Town manager Chris Wilder and his assistant Alan Knill over the vacant managerial role at The Valley, the club has been unable to reach an agreement.
