Wolves' new manager Walter Zenga was impressed by the spirit shown by his players after they secured his first win in the Sky Bet Championship with a 2-0 win against Reading at Molineux.

Goals either side of half-time from Matt Doherty and Joe Mason earned Wolves a well-deserved victory - and sentenced new Reading boss Jaap Stam to his first defeat after he had started his reign with back-to-back wins.

Zenga said: "The team played very well and there was no doubt about the final result.

"I think if we could have scored more goals it would have been nice but we got the three points and the spirit of the team on the pitch showed that they wanted to win.

"I find I have a very nice group of players who want to work and push their limits. These are the most important things and as I said before, the spirit of the team is amazing.

"We play in the right way and then we scored the goals at the perfect time.

"Sometimes I win and sometimes I learn but the passion, pride and spirit of the team must be the first three things.

"That is what we have to bring onto the pitch every time. The atmosphere was amazing as well. I have no words to describe that and my ambition remains to see the stadium full."

After dominating from the opening whistle, Wolves made a deserved breakthrough through Doherty in the 42nd minute - 60 seconds after Reading goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi had pulled off a wonder save to deny George Saville.

But he could not keep out Doherty who let fly from 12 yards after being picked out by the impressive Joao Teixeira.

Mason then put the game beyond the reach of Reading when he converted a Saville corner from six yards two minutes into the second half.

Despite the defeat, Stam remains confident that his style of play can get results in the Championship.

He said: "In these games you need to be very sharp and focused.

"Wolves were really up for it at the beginning of the game and they did really well. The system that we want to play, you need to be patient on the ball and spread the play and let them run.

"But if we lose the ball it can be very difficult and that is what we did at certain times.

"But if you are focused and concentrated then you can get results against these teams. We want to do a lot better but if you look at the team we played a lot of players who were not in the shape that they were in the last couple of weeks.

"The players are adapting very well and we will keep working on it. Even today I think sometimes we did well so in the next game we will be playing with the same system and continue that."
