Birmingham caretaker manager Lee Carsley reiterated he will not apply for the job despite overseeing a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Isaac Vassell's first goal for the club since a £1.5m summer move from Luton earned the hosts a first win in nine games in all competitions.

They remain in the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone on goal difference but have collected four points from two games under Carsley.

He took over after Harry Redknapp was sacked earlier this month but the former Birmingham midfielder will still not throw his hat into the ring with Steve Cotterill and Aitor Karanka strongly linked.

Carsley said: "It's not something I'll be doing. My stance has been clear all along, this club needs a manager with experience who is used to winning, used to setting teams up to get promoted and used to dealing with the expectation.

"I'm happy playing my part in the background. It's not for me. I said from the start if we won three games or lost three games my ambitions or plans wouldn't change. I don't think this is a first-time manager's job."

Vassell struck in the 76th minute, five minutes after Gary Hooper had a goal disallowed for offside for the visitors.

"It was about the result tonight, there's a lot of positives to take. It's important we carry this into the Hull game on Saturday," Carsley added.

"I wouldn't say I enjoyed it. It's been a bit of a weird couple of weeks, generally when you go home you're able to switch off but it's been 24 hours."
