Blues to strike for Nervo?

CARLO NERVO could receive an offer from Birmingham City when he becomes available on a free transfer under the Bosman Ruling next year.

The Bologna forward is out of contract in June, and has yet to agree fresh terms, allowing his agents to work on finding prospective employers.

Although the 31-year-old would probably prefer to remain with Bologna, speculation in Italy suggests Blues boss Steve Bruce has enquired about a player who impressed in the Intertoto Cup this year.

After plying his trade in the lower leagues, with the likes of Tolentino and Mantova, Nervo has managed to force his way into the limelight, and is likely to interest a number of clubs should he become available in 2003.

Never a prolific striker, the experienced hit-man has yet to hit the net this term in six games, and managed only one goal in 29 matches last season.

Bruce is a canny player in the transfer market, and may have tried to steal a march on his rivals by making contact with several possible summer targets.

The former Manchester United captain tried to sign Empoli hot-shot Massimo Maccarone before the Italian striker opted for a big-money switch to Middlesbrough.
