Blues chief happy with signing of midfielder

Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish is confident new signing Barry Ferguson can cut it in the Premier League. Ferguson has completed a £1million move to St Andrews from Rangers, and has signed a two-year deal with the option of a further 12 months. The 31-year-old has accepted a second stab at English football after previously struggling to make an impact during 18 months at Blackburn Rovers. McLeish feels the Scot has a point to prove following his time with Blackburn and expects Ferguson to make his mark in the top flight.

Unfinished business

"Barry has been around a long time in Scottish football, but I think he's got unfinished business in England," McLeish told the club's official website. "I believe he's very capable of competing with the best players in the Premier League." The Birmingham chief believes that Ferguson's attributes are going to play a key role this season, particularly against the bigger clubs in the Premier League. McLeish added: "Quite simply he wants the ball all the time. "When you're playing against Manchester United or Arsenal away from home you want players who are going to take the ball. "If you get the ball back and it gets kicked forward all the time you're going to surrender possession. Barry can help us to keep the ball."
