Dick Advocaat has revealed he decided to leave Sunderland before Saturday's 2-2 draw with West Ham.

Sunderland - still without a league win this season - surrendered a two goal lead at the Stadium of Light and Advocaat announced his departure as manager less than 24 hours later.

And, speaking on Dutch television on Sunday evening, Advocaat said that not even a victory would have changed his mind.

"I already made my decision last week," Advocaat told Studio Voetbal. "But the club asked me to do the match against West Ham and I really wanted to finish in style."

"I think it was time for someone else to take over at Sunderland. I became negative and that didn't feel like myself."

Our squad was simply not good enough. The club knew that we had to strengthen ourselves, but the chairman never told me how much we could spend.

However, Advocaat insisted he did not regret reversing his initial decision to leave Sunderland at the end of last season after keeping them in the Premier League.

"I don't regret signing my new contract, because it was a great experience," he added.
