Sunderland staff warned of further redundancies

Sunderland staff face another round of redundancies following a further review of the business operations at the Premier League's bottom-placed club.

Staff at both the stadium and the club's training ground were called into a meeting this morning and told that redundancies were on the way.

Sky Sports News HQ understands a number of employees received emails offering the option to take voluntary redundancies.

Chief executive Martin Bain said: "In recent months, we have undertaken a detailed review of the club's entire operation.

"It is clear that the business had lost its focus and we now have to ensure that we are better equipped to be able to concentrate on the areas that are key to taking Sunderland AFC forward.

"We want to ensure that the football club is in the best possible position to grow stronger, both on and off the field."

In recent months, the commercial director and head of HR have left their roles without being replaced.

Sunderland, who held an open day for fans yesterday, sent their first team squad to New York on a team-bonding and mid-season training trip last week.

"The decisions have not been taken lightly," added Brain.

"The internal process required in order to undertake the changes has already commenced and club staff have been advised of the procedures and timescales involved."
