Sunderland are targeting Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder as they attempt to fill their managerial vacancy, Sky Sports News HQ understands.
Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes rejected the opportunity to take over at Sunderland on Thursday after a compensation package had been agreed between the clubs.
Sky Sports News HQ understands Wilder is one of a number of candidates under consideration as Sunderland step up their search to find a replacement for David Moyes.
The Wearsiders conceded on Friday that doubts over the future ownership of the club were affecting their search for a new man in charge, saying 'the recruitment process, whilst still very much active, cannot be concluded imminently.'
The club also said that if the sale was not completed within a "defined time frame", owner Ellis Short would pull out of negotiations and press on with plans for next season.
Wilder, who succeeded Nigel Adkins last May having led Northampton to the Sky Bet League Two title, has enjoyed a dream first season in charge at Bramall Lane, guiding the Blades to the League One title.
The 49-year-old won 30 of his 46 league matches as United returned to the Championship following six seasons away, reaching the 100-point mark process.
In May, former Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce recommended Wilder as his replacement to Eagles chairman Steve Parish.
Sunderland have been without a manager since Moyes resigned from his position in May following the club's relegation from the Premier League.
