Harry Redknapp has been appointed as a football advisor at Derby County.

Redknapp will assist head coach Darren Wassall until the end of the season, after Paul Clement was sacked on February 8.

The 69-year-old will combine his new role with managing the Jordan national team for their next two Word Cup qualifiers, against Bangladesh and Australia, later this month.

Derby are fifth in the table ahead of their clash with east Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest, which is live on Sky Sports on Saturday lunchtime.

"It is excellent news that Harry has agreed to join us. His experience spans over several decades and he is one of the most knowledgeable and informed figures in the game," Derby chairman Mel Morris told the club's official website.

"When I spoke with Harry about the possibility of helping out on a short-term basis, it was evident from the start that he was excited at the prospect of joining us.

"I am sure he will perfectly complement Darren and the rest of our staff."

"From the first conversation I had with the chairman it was clear he has exciting plans for the football club," he said. "I am delighted to be able to help out and am looking forward to working with Darren and his team."

Wassall, who has led the Rams to three victories, three defeats and a draw since taking over from Clement, also welcomed the news.

He said: "This is a great opportunity for me and the rest of the coaches to work with somebody of Harry's experience for the remainder of the season."

Redknapp began his career in management at Bournemouth in 1983. He then spent seven years at West Ham before joining Portsmouth, where he had two spells in charge, winning the FA Cup in 2008, either side of a brief spell at their south coast rivals Southampton.

During his time at Tottenham, Redknapp was named the Premier League Manager of the Year for the 2009-10 season and guided Spurs to the Champions League quarter-finals two years later, followed by a stint at Loftus Road.
