Paul Lambert is likely to be confirmed as the new Wolves manager in the next 48 hours, according to Sky sources.
He will replace Italian Walter Zenga, whose reign lasted just 87 days after he arrived at Molineux in the summer.
Lambert, 47, has extensive experience of the Championship, leading Norwich to promotion in 2010-11.
Wolves are currently languishing in 17th in the table and first-team coach Rob Edwards, put in temporary charge after Zenga was sacked on 25 October, is set to take charge against Derby on Saturday.
Lambert - whose best years as a player were spent with Celtic and Borussia Dortmund - made his name as a manager at Wycombe Wanderers, leading them to the League Cup semi-finals in 2007.
He moved to Colchester and then Norwich City, who he guided from League One to the Premier League with successive promotions.
In 2012, he moved to Aston Villa and he kept them in the top flight for two seasons before losing his job in February 2015.
He became Blackburn boss in November last year and kept them in the Championship, but he quit at the end of the season.
