Southampton's Jay Rodriguez is hoping to return within eight weeks after having successful surgery on a foot problem.

Sky Sports News HQ understands that the 26-year-old is feeling positive after having a minor operation on Tuesday and is confident of a quick recovery.

Rodriguez has not played since October 17, having only returned from a year-long absence with a ruptured cruciate ligament at the end of last season, and could be out until mid-January.

Ahead of Saturday's 0-1 defeat at home to Stoke, boss Ronald Koeman said: "Jay is not good.

"It's now a long time and we have to make a really tough decision how we treat it. Maybe it will be a surgery next week.

"His foot is still a problem; it gives him a lot of pain. We did everything and now the final call will maybe be surgery next week."

Rodriguez has made 12 appearances this season and scored three goals, after vowing to return to his best following last year's absence.
