What do Southampton need in the summer transfer window?

We take a look at the ways in which Southampton need to strengthen in the summer transfer window.
What are the key areas for improvement? Who could fill the gaps?
We examine the situation with the help of manager quotes and expert pundit views...
Ins
Nathan Redmond (Norwich, £11m), Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Bayern Munich, £12.8m)
Major outs
Sadio Mane (Liverpool, £36m), Victor Wanyama (Tottenham, £11m), Juanmi (Real Sociedad, £5m), Gaston Ramirez (released), Kelvin Davis (retired), Joe Lea (Yeovil, free), Jason McCarthy (Walsall, loan), Graziano Pelle (Shandong Luneng, undisclosed)
What they need...
A new striker. Another goalscorer should be the number-one priority to compensate for the exits of Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle, who combined for 22 Premier League goals last season. Charlie Austin and Jay Rodriguez should step up into bigger roles, but each have fitness concerns so Claude Puel will need to dip into the market, especially with European football on the horizon.
A back-up to Fraser Forster will also be required following Kelvin Davis' retirement and the end of Maarten Stekelenburg's loan spell, but the starting goalkeeper position and back four remains settled.
The club has acted quickly to strengthen following the departures of Wanyama and Mane, although neither Hojbjerg nor Redmond are like-for-like replacements.
Who are the targets?
Claude Puel's arrival from Nice has seen Southampton linked with a number of Ligue 1 players. Former Nice defender Jeremy Pied is out of contract and has been mentioned in gossip columns, while Sofiane Boufal is reportedly a target too.
They could face some serious competition for the 22-year-old Lille attacker, with Chelsea and Arsenal also in the mix.
What the manager has said
"I am very happy to be the new manager, because it's a good opportunity and a good challenge for me to come here to Southampton, a very good club and a very good organisation.
"I think it will be important to give success and to keep the philosophy of the club - a squad with very good technique and a team that can give pleasure for the fans also."
Matt Le Tissier's view
"We probably need a back-up goalkeeper because Paulo Gazzaniga has always looked a bit nervous when he's come in and I think we'll also need some cover at centre-back. You're maybe looking at the front three with Jay Rodriguez, Charlie Austin and Shane Long as a bit light because of their injury problems, so some competition would be good."
