Post-match reaction from Claude Puel after Southampton’s 0-0 draw with Leicester

Claude Puel admits he was angry with Charlie Austin after he tried to chip Kasper Schmeichel as Southampton drew 0-0 with Leicester.

The striker had hit the post with a good effort early in the first half and looked a threat in front of watching caretaker England manager Gareth Southgate.

He should have done much better in the second, however, when he was put in on goal but opted to lift the ball over Schmeichel when he was already closing the forward down and leaving little space.

Had Austin scored, Southampton would have been on course for a win they would have deserved and his miss left Puel frustrated at taking a point instead.

Asked if he was angry at the former QPR player, Puel said: "Yeah, because he made a bad decision. The solution is it is easier on the ground to put the ball in. It's a shame.

"I think we have made a very good game. It is very difficult to play against Leicester with big pressure and their pressing.

"It was important for us to put the ball on the ground and to play. I think we had many chances and opportunities.

"Leicester - sometimes off a mistake or a passback - also had them but I thought we could win this game at the end.

Leicester 0-0 Southampton

"We had many possibilities and it is a little disappointing to finish the game without a goal and without another result."

Southampton reverted back to the team which defeated West Ham 3-0 last week after making seven changes while on Europa League duty in Israel on Thursday against Hapoel Be'er Sheva.

Nevertheless, having less time to prepare than their opponents - Leicester beat Porto 1-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday - meant a disjointed build-up.

Puel added: "We have been playing every three days but it is important to play well every time.

"This afternoon, for example, Leicester have had five days for recovery and for us it was just two but we saw a good game from my team.

"There were many, many situations with good action and good qualities. It was very interesting for the future.

"We showed we have the possibility good football away from home and against a team like Leicester, who have good organisation and are very strong in defence.

"It was important for us to see our possibilities and it was interesting but at the moment it is frustrating because we feel we could have won this game."
