Ryan Bertrand admits his side face a tough task to stop Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe

Puel said: "I saw all of this week a good level. For the first time in a long time, we had a whole week to prepare for the game.

"The squad is angry with the last results. We have to correct this and give a good answer.

"We have to keep a good ambition. We cannot accept this position and the last results. It's not us."

Southampton, who are without Sofiane Boufal (ankle), will face a Sunderland side high on confidence following their 4-0 win at Crystal Palace last weekend.

Puel is wary of David Moyes' side but says a win would provide them with the best possible preparation for their next game - the EFL Cup final against Manchester United on February 26.

Puel also gave an update on their pursuit of free agent Martin Caceres, the former Barcelona and Juventus defender.

He said: "We will see in a few days. We will see if he can bring something for the squad, if he signs.

"For the moment it is just speculation. We don't know. Of course I think he is an international player and his quality, his spirit, can be interesting."
