Southampton are in advanced talks to sign Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt, Sky Sports News understands.

The 23-year-old made his international debut for the Netherlands earlier this year having impressed after moving to Italy on a free transfer from AZ Alkmaar in 2015.

Sky in Italy understand the Saints have made a £15.5m offer for the centre-back but the deal is not yet agreed.

He made 21 appearances in Serie A last season, scoring three times but had to watch from the bench as Lazio beat Juventus 3-2 in the Italian Super Cup on Sunday.

Hoedt could yet line up alongside fellow Dutchman Virgil van Dijk, with Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger insisting he will not be sold despite requesting a transfer last week.

If he signs, Hoedt will be the fourth new arrival at St Mary's this summer following the addition of Mario Lemina from Juventus, Gornik Leczna defender Jan Bednarek and 16-year-old Will Ferry from Bury.
