Southampton are interested in Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, according to Sky sources.
But Celtic's Virgil van Dijk remains Saints' first choice as they target a new centre-half, and it means there has been no formal bid yet for Koulibaly.
It is believed any potential deal for Van Dijk hinges on whether Celtic qualify for the Champions League, which they believe will put them in a stronger position to convince the Dutchman to stay.
Ronny Deila's side face Swedish champions Malmo FF in the first leg of their Champions League play-off at Celtic Park on Wednesday evening.
Koulibaly, 24, is a former France Under-20 international who joined the club from Belgian club Genk for £8m last summer and made 37 appearances in all competitions.
He began his youth career with hometown club Saint-Die and nearby Metz, before breaking into the latter's first-team in 2010.
Sky sources understand Southampton also have an interest in Brentford defender James Tarkowski.
