Grimsby to lose striker

Alan Buckley is not expecting to be able to bring Martin Paterson back to Grimsby Town.

Alan Buckley is not expecting to be able to bring on-loan striker Martin Paterson back to Grimsby Town.

Paterson has impressed with the League Two club during his time on loan from Stoke, scoring six goals in 13 appearances.

His spell at Blundell Park ends next week and Mariners boss Buckley laments the fact there is no prospect of a permanent deal.

"Unfortunately Martin will have completed his 93-day period with us," Buckley told the club's official website. "It looks highly unlikely that he can stay any longer.

"In Martin's case you would have him any time. I certainly hope that we haven't seen the last of him at this football club.

"For supporters to sing 'why don't you sign him', we've got to get real.

"When he joined the club on loan there was never any possibility of us making anything permanent for a player like Martin."
