Alan Pardew could replace Roy Hodgson as England manager after impressing with Crystal Palace, according to John Dillon.
The Eagles are flying high in third in the Premier League after beating West Brom on Saturday, and the Evening Standard's Dillon told Sunday Supplement he thinks Pardew is the leading candidate for the national team job.
"I think we all want England to be managed by an Englishman," he said. "The FA flip each time between home and away but there aren't many other candidates out there who are English to manage the England team (other than Pardew).
"My view is that all national teams should be managed by someone of that nationality."
After a difficult end to his spell at Newcastle, Pardew has revitalised Palace since taking over at Selhurst Park in January, and admitted on Saturday that it was his aim to one day manage a top-four club - or take on the England job.
And Dillon hopes to see Pardew realise his ambition.
"We all want to see an English manager reach the top levels of the game," he added.
"One of the debates about Pardew is that after a while the momentum gets lost, but maybe that's based a bit about what happened at Newcastle where there were other circumstances at work as well.
"But he seems to be a guy who lives and learns and at the moment Palace look terrific."
