Bryan Klug has been appointed caretaker manager of Ipswich Town until the end of the season following Mick McCarthy's departure.

The club's head of coaching and player development takes charge with the team 12th in the Championship, ahead of their trip to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor left the club with immediate effect after Tuesday night's 1-0 home win over Barnsley.

Ipswich owner Marcus Evans does not expect to have a new manager in place until the summer.

Evans has told the club's website that he will take his time over an appointment and that it is unlikely a new man will be in place before the end of the season.

"Appointing a manager is one of the most important - if not the most important - decision an owner of a football club will make," said Evans.

"I have started the process, but I will take all the time I need to find the right person.

"A lot can happen around the end of the season with managers, so I want to be in the best position I can be before making an appointment.

"I can't rule it out completely, but I don't envisage confirming our next manager until the season is finished."

Klug worked as an assistant to manager Jim Magilton between 2006 and 2008 before overseeing the development of players and coaches at the club's academy.

He enjoyed a spell at Tottenham's academy, but rejoined Ipswich in the summer of 2012.
