David McNally has resigned as Norwich chief executive with the club on the brink of relegation from the Premier League.
The Canaries need to win their last two matches and hope Sunderland slip up twice to avoid dropping into the Championship after they slipped to a damaging 1-0 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday afternoon.
McNally appeared to have resigned on Saturday night after replying to a post by another Twitter user by writing: "That's okay and I understand. I've resigned tonight and I hope that the club can now progress."
He then backtracked on that, writing: "I take back what was said earlier. I remain fully committed to NCFC and to [owners] Delia [Smith] and Michael [Wynn-Jones] and I've not resigned. My apologies".
Both tweets were subsequently deleted.
McNally joined Norwich in the summer of 2009 and previously worked for Fulham and Celtic.
His time at Carrow Road included a promotion back to the Premier League but could well see a second relegation confirmed in the next week.
A statement on the Norwich website read: "The Board of Directors has unanimously agreed to accept his resignation and would like to place on record their sincere gratitude for David's game-changing contribution to the football club since he joined in the summer of 2009.
"David played a leading role as the club erased crippling debts and rose from the lower reaches of League One to the Premier League.
"Everyone at Carrow Road wishes him all the very best for the future."
Director of finance Steve Stone has been appointed interim chief executive.
