Peter Schmeichel says Leicester can benefit from Championship title experience

Peter Schmeichel believes Leicester's experience of winning the Championship two years ago could prove crucial in their pursuit of the Premier League title this season.

Leicester, who are five points clear of Tottenham with seven games remaining, won promotion to the top flight in 2013/14 after topping the Championship with 102 points from their 46 games.

And Schmeichel, who won five titles with Manchester United, believes his son Kasper could be on the brink of claiming his first because of the pressure of that run-in two years ago.

"I know you can't compare the Championship to the Premier League, but a lot of the Leicester players only two seasons ago were in the same kind of situation having been on the same run," he told Sky Sports News HQ.

"Having missed out for a few years they got it right two years ago and scored more than 100 goals, so there is experience of finishing the job. Can they do it in the Premier League? Only time will tell.

"They've got a five-point cushion and that's a nice position to be in but there is a very long way to go yet.

"Leicester are a very inexperienced team to be in the position they are in, bigger clubs like Liverpool have been there and failed to get over the line.

"It's a race between Spurs and Leicester. We will get, I think, a new Premier League champion.

"Spurs have been fantastic. They've played some very entertaining football, they've got great players, great individuals and they are going to push and push and it's looks like they are ready to take the challenge on, even in the longer run as well."

"The run-in doesn't matter, it's just what the team is doing that matters. Leicester and Spurs deserve to be up there because they are good teams so they have to finish the job."

Asked if Kasper was coping with the pressure, he added: "Kasper is coping really well. They are throwing the clichés out like: 'they are taking one game at a time' and 'they are enjoying their football', but it is the truth.

"They are really enjoying it, they have a fantastic squad, they are great friends and they do a lot of stuff outside football together."
