Danny Simpson says the Leicester players are trying their utmost

LEICESTER, ENGLAND - AUGUST 27: Danny Simpson of Leicester City in action during the Premier League match between Leicester City and Swansea City at The Ki

Danny Simpson says Sunday's performance in a losing cause against Manchester United was proof that Leicester are trying their best for manager Claudio Ranieri.

The Foxes have made a miserable start to 2017 and, just a year after being crowned Premier League champions, they are only a point clear of the relegation zone.

Ranieri's canny management played a huge role in Leicester's remarkable campaign last season but it has been suggested the players are starting to lose faith in the veteran Italian boss.

But full-back Simpson said: "Because of our situation, that is the papers trying to stir the pot.

Gary Neville, Niall Quinn and Jamie Carragher discuss where it is going wrong for Leicester

"Look at the performance [in the 3-0 loss to United]. Up until 42 minutes we were solid, we were good, everyone was fighting.

"You can see from the performance on the pitch the lads are trying, and that is that. We knew it wasn't going to be like last season but it is tougher than we thought."

Leicester pulled off an amazing escape from relegation two season ago and Simpson says they must now draw on that experience.

"The good thing is we have been here before, we have been here two years ago," he added.

"The majority of the squad were here two years ago. In that respect we have experience in that. The players who were here then can help some of the other lads through, and we will pull together."

Leicester have a huge game against Swansea at the weekend and Simpson thinks the best way to prepare will be with a victory in Wednesday's FA Cup replay against Derby.

"Sunday is big, I get that, but I want to play Wednesday, we need a win," he said.

"I know it is not the league but we need a win. Maybe Wednesday can help with our confidence, it is a big game.

"I don't think you should write it off because of what is going on in the league. It is a football match, and you want to win matches. Maybe Wednesday is what we need at home against Derby to kick us on."
