Mike Phelan 'excited' by deal to become Hull City head coach

Mike Phelan has said he is 'excited' to become the next permanent head coach of Hull City.

After weeks of speculation over his job status, Phelan's appointment was finally confirmed by the club on Thursday evening.

The 54-year-old became caretaker boss following Steve Bruce's departure in July and was named Premier League manager of the month for August.

This will be the former Manchester United assistant's first permanent managerial job and he said: "It's been a while in coming, but I'm happy with the position I am now in and looking forward to the challenge ahead.

"It has taken time but things have to be done correctly with these matters. What is important now is that we move forward and help this squad of players be successful for this football club.

"It's exciting to step over that threshold into management, and I'm looking forward to working with this group of players that has done so well so far.

"The support I have received from everyone has been magnificent and I want that to continue because the challenges ahead are huge. The fans have been excellent through the last few months and the players have given me their full backing.

"I'm looking forward to what is to come now, so roll on the next few games."

Hull's current owners, the Allam family, have been trying to find a buyer for several months, according to Sky sources.

Meanwhile, Hull have announced that Stephen Clemence has left the club after four years to join Bruce's new coaching regime at Aston Villa.

A Hull statement read: "Everyone at the club would like to thank Stephen for his fine contribution during his four years on the coaching staff and wish him the very best in the future."

Clemence's departure leaves goalkeeping coach Gary Walsh as the only other senior member of the backroom staff to support Phelan, as the first team and reserve coaching posts are currently vacant.

Bruce said of Phelan: "He's an experienced man, I think he's handled the situation with aplomb, I have to say that.

"I'm extremely grateful we took in Stephen Clemence, Mick was very instrumental and there was no problem in Stephen coming here. So I wish him the best of luck, he's finally got the gig and I wish him all the best."

Hull, presently 15th in the standings, are away at Bournemouth on Premier League duty on Saturday.
