Rico Henry struck a 27th-minute winner as Walsall narrowed the gap on Sky Bet League One leaders Burton to one point with a 1-0 win over Scunthorpe at Glanford Park.
Henry's early strike proved good enough for the Saddlers, while Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's Burton had to be content with a goalless draw at home to Sheffield United.
Third-placed Gillingham continued their fine start to the season as they came from behind to thrash Fleetwood 5-1 at Priestfield Stadium.
Bobby Grant put the visitors ahead but Gills responded with a Rory Donnelly double and further strikes from Jordan Houghton and John Egan before half-time. Cody McDonald added a fifth after Fleetwood's Eggert Jonsson was sent off late on.
Bury edged a five-goal thriller at 10-man Peterborough, who had Edhun Oztumer sent off for violent conduct after 25 minutes.
Leon Clarke fired Bury in front and despite a double from Gabriel Zakuani temporarily putting Posh in control, further goals Nathan Cameron and substitute Tom Pope won it for the Shakers.
There were also five goals at Spotland where Peter Vincenti, Ian Henderson and Jamie Allen gave Rochdale a 3-0 lead over Shrewsbury inside the opening quarter of an hour.
Nathaniel Knight-Percival and James Collins struck back for the visitors before half-time but it was not enough to earn a point.
Will Grigg struck two minutes into injury time to earn a 2-2 draw for Wigan at home to Millwall, while Callum Harriott and Marvin Sordell scored in the first half to give Colchester a 2-0 home win over Bradford.
Goals from Mark Cullen and Brad Potts moved Blackpool off the bottom of the table with a 2-0 win over Chesterfield and the Tangerines are replaced by Crewe, who fell 2-1 at home to Southend due to a Joe Pigott double.
Doncaster were denied three points by Jonathan Obika's injury-time equaliser for Swindon in a 2-2 draw at the Keepmoat Stadium, while Port Vale and Oldham drew 1-1.
