Crewe captain Harry Davis will undergo knee surgery to remove a floating bone from his knee.
The defender was forced off in the 1-1 draw at Walsall on Saturday and had only just returned from a month out with another knee problem.
Davis, who missed the start of the campaign, has made four appearances for Alex this season and boss Steve Davis does not know when he will return.
He told the club's official website: "Harry will undergo some surgery to remove a piece of floating bone and clean it up. They will look at it and assess the damage and they will have more of an idea of how long we can expect to be without him.
"We are hoping that it is not as bad as the previous problem and that he won't be out for as long.
"It is a blow to lose him because we were looking more solid defensively at Shrewsbury and Walsall and he had started to establish a good partnership with Ben (Nugent)."
