Southend United defender Adam Barrett has signed a new one-year contract with the Sky Bet League One club.

Barrett has made 331 appearances in two spells at the club, having spent six years there before leaving for Crystal Palace in 2010.

After spells with Leyton Orient, Bournemouth, Gillingham and Wimbledon, the 36-year-old returned to Roots Hall in January 2014 and helped the club win promotion via the play-offs.

"Obviously I've gained back-to-back promotion with Southend United before and there's a huge desire in the camp to achieve this again, it's going to be difficult but we will give everything we've got in the remaining matches." Barrett told the club's website.

Manager Phil Brown said: "I couldn't be happier that Adam has agreed to extend his stay at the club. He's not just a fan favourite, he's a manager's favourite, a coach's favourite and a player's favourite.

"You have to step back and admire what he stands for. When he steps onto that pitch he puts his body on the line and wears the shirt with the pride.

"He's coming to twilight of his career but he still has a lot to offer on and off the pitch. We have 10 games to go and Adam shares the same vision as me to get his beloved club into the Championship."
