Second-placed Wigan closed the gap on Sky Bet League One leaders Burton to three points on Friday with a 4-1 thrashing of Swindon at the County Ground.
Will Grigg put the away side 1-0 up and the Latics then netted three more times in four second-half minutes with goals from Max Power, Grigg again and Sam Morsy.
Swindon registered a consolation through Nick Ajose in the 79th minute before their misery was compounded by Nathan Thompson being sent off four minutes from time.
Wigan have now played a game more than Burton, with the Brewers in action on Saturday when they host relegation battlers Oldham, who are 21st.
Coventry missed the chance to move back into the play-off positions after suffering a 3-1 defeat away at Peterborough.
Michael Bostwick put the home side in front on the stroke of half-time, with Lee Angol adding a second in the 61st minute.
Former England international Joe Cole pulled a goal back for Coventry with 25 minutes remaining, but Harry Beautyman made sure of the points for Peterborough, who move up to 14th in the table.
Defeat leaves Coventry in ninth-place, three point off Barnsley in the final play-off position.
Colchester moved off the bottom of the table after coming from behind to thump fellow strugglers Doncaster 4-1 at home.
The visitors went ahead in the 21st minute when Gary McSheffrey scored, but the U's then turned things around after the break.
They scored three times in quick succession after the hour mark through Chris Porter, Elliot Lee and Alex Gilbey.
Richard Brindley added another with two minutes to go as Doncaster endured a sixth straight defeat and dropped a place to 22nd.
Colchester, with only their second win in 24 league games, moved up a spot and were replaced at the bottom by Crewe, who went down 3-2 at Sheffield United.
After Che Adams and Ryan Flynn had put the Blades 2-0 up, goals from David Fox and Harry Davis brought things level. But Billy Sharp then struck in the 87th minute to condemn Crewe to a third loss in a row.
Crewe, Colchester and Doncaster are nine, eight and two points respectively behind 20th-placed Blackpool, who drew 1-1 at home with Bury, with Danny Philliskirk converting a penalty in the 74th minute, only for Danny Mayor to equalise two minutes later.
At the other end of the table, Barnsley stayed sixth after they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Scunthorpe in Graham Alexander's first game in charge of the Iron.
Rochdale moved to within two points of the Tykes after they produced a comeback to see off Southend 4-1 at home.
Jack Payne gave the away side the lead, but Rochdale responded emphatically through Grant Holt, Joe Rafferty, Jamie Allen and Joe Bunney.
Friday's other 3pm kick-off saw Shrewsbury and Port Vale draw 1-1 at the Greenhous Meadow, Louis Dodds putting the visitors 1-0 up before Sullay Kaikai's reply.
