Steven Pressley resigns as manager of Fleetwood Town

Steven Pressley has resigned as manager of Fleetwood Town.

The League One club have recently returned from a pre-season training camp in Holland and the news comes just 11 days before their opening league game at Northampton on August 6.

Fleetwood finished 19th last season, five points clear of the relegation places.

A statement read: "Fleetwood Town can confirm we have agreed to accept the resignation of manager Steven Pressley.

"The decision was made this morning following a meeting with the 42-year-old where it was agreed it would be best to take the club in a different direction.

"Fleetwood Town would like to thank Steven for his professionalism and effort during his nine months at Highbury, particularly in successfully maintaining the club's League One status last season. 

"Our focus will now turn to the prompt recruitment of a new manager to take the club forward."

The club confirmed assistant Neil MacFarlane had also left Highbury while first-team coach Barry Nicholson, academy director Stuart Murdoch and goalkeeping coach David Lucas took charge of Tuesday night's friendly against Southport.

Pressley, who replaced Graham Alexander in October 2015, also spent two years in charge of Coventry having cut his managerial teeth with Falkirk.

Pressley was due to take charge of Fleetwood in a friendly against his former side Hearts at Tynecastle on Saturday July 30 and the Scottish side later announced that the match had been called off 'due to circumstances outwith the club's control'.

Hearts said they still hoped to have a game against alternative opponents and would make a statement in that regard in due course.
